Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is a non-profit organization that believes in the power of mentoring to help children reach their full potential. The mission of the organization is to provide positive relationships that can help change lives for the better. Through its program, the organization is making a significant impact in the local community by pairing every child who needs a mentor with a volunteer mentor.

The success of the program is evident in the positive impact it has made on the lives of both children and their mentors. Various examples of these positive impacts have been shared in videos of some of the matches made by the organization. By seeing firsthand how being a mentor and having a mentor has changed lives, more people are encouraged to sign up and participate in the program.

One of the mentors, Nolan, became a Big Brother to make a difference in someone’s life. The child he was matched with didn’t have a male role model in his life, and so Nolan stepped in to fill that void. Together, they attended sports games, went fishing, and played video games. Nolan shared that “it was amazing to spend time with him and make him feel appreciated.”

Another match, Jiraphanh, shared how being a “little sister” in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program helped her learn and grow. Her big sister helped her talk through decisions, have higher confidence in herself, and feel unburdened by sharing whatever was on her mind. Jiraphanh’s academic performance improved, and she now plans on pursuing a degree in pharmacy.

Moreover, mentoring has been found to be successful in improving academic performance. 95% of the organization’s littles maintained or increased their grades from the previous year, while 76% of littles who were mentored for 18+ months saw increased confidence in their academic ability.

Aside from academic improvements, the program also helps mentees improve their social skills and build better relationships with their parents. It also contributes to reducing risky behaviors. The impact that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah has made is possible through the commitment of volunteers who have become mentors and who are dedicated to uplifting teens.

The organization’s most significant point is that changes can be made through one person. By taking the time to make a positive difference in someone’s life, a mentor can change that person’s whole trajectory. Being a mentor means that one has the potential to change the trajectory of a younger generation.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah invites more volunteers to join the program and become mentors. The organization’s message is straightforward – by becoming a mentor, anyone can make a real difference in someone’s life.
