Peter Taibbi, a former Special Operations medic, experienced a tragic event that changed his life forever. While on a mission, his teammate, Alan, fell to his death, leaving behind his wife, who was pregnant at the time. The weight of Alan’s fall also caused Peter to fall to his death, leaving behind his young child. Taibbi was the team leader and a medic on this mission, and he felt responsible for the death of his teammate and friend.

The loss of his friend and teammate, combined with the constant stress and trauma of serving in the military, led Taibbi to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He struggled with depression, guilt, and anger, and he even experienced night terrors. Taibbi’s wife even told him that their children were scared of him. This was a wake-up call for Taibbi, and he knew he needed help.

Taibbi began seeing a therapist, and she ultimately saved his life. He credits her with guiding him out of the darkest place he had ever been in. However, as he prepared to leave the military, he realized that he was losing the resources he had been relying on for so long. He knew he needed to create something that would help veterans like himself.

This led Taibbi to start the non-profit organization, Shields and Stripes, which provides mental and physical health resources for veterans. Taibbi recognized that mental and physical health go hand in hand, and if one is suffering, the other will suffer as well. He partnered with Jennifer Fiddler to co-found Shields and Stripes, and they began building it from scratch.

Despite facing challenges and naysayers who told him it was impossible, Taibbi remained committed to his mission. He knew how important it was to provide veterans with the help and treatment they needed, and nothing was going to stop him. Shields and Stripes offers veterans a chance to heal, just as Taibbi himself was able to heal with the help of his therapist.

Taibbi’s story is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices our veterans make and the toll that military service can take on their mental health. It is also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community. Shields and Stripes is a shining example of what can be accomplished when people come together to support a common cause, and it is changing the lives of veterans across the country.
